Mia Thompson

Owner/Broker

Mia Thompson is an owner and president of The Knowles Company in Northeast Harbor, Maine, a real estate agency founded in 1898.  First joining the company in 1989, Mia purchased the agency in 1994 with two broker/partners. She has successfully built upon the founder’s strong local traditions and high standard of professionalism ever since, growing an extensive national and international client base.  Through her 30 years of experience, she has developed a keen sense of the market and a clear vision of how to facilitate a successful transaction in the most professional and thorough manner. Under her direction The Knowles Company has consistently ranked in the top 3 among Mount Desert Island (MDI) area agencies over the past 25 years.  Her local knowledge, combined with extensive real estate experience and success as a top producer, is a direct and proven benefit to both buyers and sellers.

Originally from Berwyn, PA, she spent her childhood summers in Northeast Harbor where her paternal great grandparents the Hartes established a summer home in the early 1900s.  Years of summering on MDI have fostered a deep sense of respect and gratitude for the gifts the Island shares with its residents. Mia attended Boston University and completed her BA in Economics at the University of Maine. She moved to Mount Desert Island full-time in 1986.

Mia’s passions outside of work include the raising of her two sons, the youngest of which is currently in college.  She serves on numerous volunteer boards on MDI, is active in community theatre work, and grooming XC skiing trails in Acadia National Park, and serves as a Trustee for the MDI High School. Currently, she is the vice commodore of the Northeast Harbor Fleet as well as president of their Green Team which she founded in 2016.  Off-island she sits on a family board and the Advisory Council for Oceana.  Oceana is an international non-profit focused on sustaining world fish stocks and global ocean health–a mission that Mia is passionate about.

A consummate sailor, and highly experienced racer, Mia still finds time to enjoy hiking, tennis, biking, and all forms of skiing.  With Acadia National Park as her back yard and abundant sailing waters all around, she finds Mount Desert Island the perfect location in which to live and work.
