Property Description:

Located in the Eden Street Historic District of Bar Harbor and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, this French-style home with 136 feet of private shorefront and ever-changing views of Frenchman's Bay, Bar Harbor, and the Porcupine Islands, offers its guests timeless romance in a private oceanfront setting. And it's all within walking or biking distance to Acadia National Park and the village of Bar Harbor! Bagatelle was designed and built in 1887 by famed architect, Arthur Rotch, who designed twenty Bar Harbor "cottages" between 1883 and 1890. Today, it's one of only seven Arthur Rotch cottages that survived the great fire of 1947. Lovingly restored by expert craftsmen, rich interiors express the well-measured exuberance of Victorian residential architecture. With lavish moldings, fine wainscoting, and elaborate hand-carved mantels, the period's desire for invention and variety are evident.

About this area:

Bar Harbor's village and surrounding rural residential areas are a popular destination for visitors to Acadia National Park. The town center offers diverse shops, restaurants and activities. Acadia National Park's Hulls Cove entrance, as well as other major entrances, are located just outside the village center. Not all properties listed as 'Bar Harbor' are actually in the village of Bar Harbor, since the town of Bar Harbor encompasses the northern half of Mt. Desert Island, most of which is quite rural in nature. However, homes within this area are usually between five and fifteen minutes' drive to the village center.

Perfect family vacation

We stayed at Bagatelle for a week in August 2021 with three generations of family members and 6 different households. It far exceeded all expectations! We will never forget that beautiful view from the porch—sunrise over the bay, the breeze coming in off the water, the sound of the tides going in and out. The house itself is so grand, well-kept and comfortable, and well-stocked with everything we needed. We mainly picked the house for proximity to Bar Harbor and Acadia, but I think we all enjoyed just lounging around the house the most!

Ideal Vacationi Home

My family has vacationed at Bagatelle four times. Each time we've had a crew of family and/or friends; this year we had a family reunion, with siblings coming in from all over the country. What a treat, and everyone raved about Bagatelle. In spite of all the things to see and do in Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park, some of our guests never wanted to leave the amazing porch overlooking Frenchman's Bay. The house is an easy walk to Bar Harbor, but is far enough away and so secluded that you barely realize there's a town nearby. We had the pleasure this year of sitting on the lawn in the Adirondack chairs to watch the Bar Harbor 4th of July fireworks, which was a real treat. On a clear night, there is enough darkness around the house that you can even see the Milky Way! This is a beautiful 19th century cottage, with lovely furnishings and a fascinating history, but it has always felt so comfortable to be there. We have stayed at multiple places on Mt. Desert Island, but Bagatelle has us completely spoiled. We love it and can't wait to go back!

We are a large extended family that has been staying at Bagatelle for 15 plus years. We love everything about this historic house and property. We did enjoy the new fire pit this summer.

Bagatelle was perfect for a large family vacation. Our favorite time was sitting on the wide porch overlooking Frenchman Bay. It's hard to decide if the morning or evening view is more spectacular. Staying in this historic home with the impressive Acadia National Park in its backyard, with Bar Harbor just a short walk away, made for a very memorable vacation. July 2020.
