Property Description:

From the heart of Mount Desert Island's western side, this inviting waterfront cottage located on the main road leading to and from the famous Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse offers picturesque views of Bass Harbor and the outer islands. Thoughtfully designed and decorated, Seascape reflects the Island's rustic sophistication by merging modern comforts with island charm through unique architectural features, antique furnishings, bright living spaces and custom woodwork. From Adirondack chairs set upon the seawall, watch local lobstermen and the ferry to Swans Island come and go or nestle into cozy window seats inside with a cup of coffee and a good book. For a more active outdoor experience, launch a kayak from the water's edge to explore the coves of Bernard and Bass Harbor or venture to one of the western hiking trails of Acadia. The bustling village of Southwest Harbor, the Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse and Thurston's Lobster Pound are also close by, and the rest of the Island is easily accessible by car or via the free Island Explorer Shuttle.

FIRST FLOOR: Open floor plan offers a well-equipped country-style Kitchen with open shelves, counter seating and delightful views to the Harbor. Dining Area with custom built table for four to six. Center Living Area opens to a Library with built-in book shelves and cable TV, each offering access to the outdoor deck with water views. Cozy alcove Sun Room with bench seat offers wonderful views of the shore, the Harbor and the outer islands. Mud Room entry with laundry area. Spacious Half Bathroom.

SECOND FLOOR: Spacious Primary Bedroom with Queen Bed, French doors to private balcony, cathedral ceiling and water views from two vantage points. Guest Bedroom with Twin Beds and more limited views. The shared Bathroom is unique in that there are two entrances, one from the Primary Bedroom and one from the hallway, each with its own toilet and sink area that looks through the shared shower to the other toilet and sink.

About this area:

The 'quiet side' of Mt. Desert Island, which includes Bass Harbor, Tremont, Seal Cove, and Bernard on the southern and western sides of the island, is much more rural in nature and only about twenty to thirty minutes to major park entrances. What Bass Harbor lacks in shopping, it makes up for in seafood restaurants and local color, as this is a village with a true 'Down East' flavor, as well as the famous Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse.

Beautiful home and fantastic location

The house's location says it all. A wide view of the harbor with our favorite lobster pound, Thurston's, across the bay. The house is very well equipped and you can tell the owners love the house. We've already put in a request for next year so we can enjoy it all again.

A charming, cozy, well-loved house

We stayed a week in July 2021. We had originally planned to come in 2020, but the Knowles Company and the property owners helped us postpone our stay when it became clear that travel would be challenging. We’re so glad we were able to visit. Acadia National Park was the most crowded we’ve ever seen it in many years of visiting. Luckily, we had this wonderful escape on the “quiet side” of the island to return to each day. The cabin is thoughtfully furnished and welcoming. The kitchen has everything you could need. There’s also a wood stove and ample firewood available if you are comfortable using one, and an integrated tankless water heat/radiator system if you aren’t. The view of the harbor is lovely, and the cottage is arranged so that you don’t really notice the nearby road. There were also board games to entertain our young children and kayaks available for the adults. What really distinguishes Seascape from the many other places we have stayed in is the warmth and personality of the place—it really feels like you are staying in the family home that it is and not an anonymous corporate rental. We later learned that the original owner was very involved in historic preservation and it shows in the details—which include carefully restored heart pine floors and weathered doors—that pair well with the updated layout and modern conveniences.

We had a truly wonderful holiday. The property was so well equipped and had a real wow factor. The boys had a fabulous time canoeing. Sunset at Bass Harbor lighthouse and visiting the shoreline were highlights. Loved Echo Lake, nature obsessed child chased garter snakes. Two great afternoons at the beach exploring rock pools.
